Fashion is getting harder to keep up with these days, but if you know what you like, it’s not so hard to keep up on the trends that matter, so the first word of advice is to stop worrying about what everyone else is wearing and instead focus on what you like. If you’re not a big stileto wearer, then what do you care if black stiletos are in right now? If you’re more tuned in to casual wear, then what good does it do you to keep up with red carpet fashion?
Figure out where your happy place is when it comes to fashion and stick to it. You don’t need to rock out in every style, just your own. That being said, here are some items that are hot this year that you might want to add to your repertoire:
1. Color Blocks
A big thing with pop stars and youth icons like Katy Perry these days are to wear big, solid blocks of color rather than patterns and shirts with contrasting trims. So a common look might be a tangerine top with a thick black leather belt and a blue skirt. Rather than subtle two tones and clever patterns, the focus here is on big, bold blocks of color.
2. Boy Styles
Boyish styles like swimming trunks and big t-shirts are becoming more and more popular among women. Somewhere along the line somebody decided that pockets and comfort weren’t such a bad idea. This is primarily a trend in casual wear, but the point is that the stigma attached to boyish clothing isn’t really there anymore. You can wear tennis shoes and short hair wherever you like, throwing your own personal feminine twist on classic boy styles.
3. Natural Hair
For years African-American entertainers would straighten their hair and dye it to get that glam, pop star look. Now, natural hair is making a comeback. Stars like Esperanza Spalding and Sydney Poitier are bringing back styles like Afros and long curly hair. The strong, bold, beautiful look of curly hair was big in the 70’s and it’s getting to be big again today.
Expect to see these styles in play this year. Feel free to try them on or follow your own muse.
