If you love the water, then travel to Maui and experience some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling you can find anywhere. The warm crystal clear waters are full of wildlife, maybe just as curious about you as you are about them! Many great locations can be driven to and are just a short swim from the beach. You can also take a dive boat or rent a kayak to get to those out of the way spots.
Dive in a Volcano
The Molokini Crater is an inactive volcano three miles off the Maui coast. It is considered one of the best dive sites in Hawaii. Many tour boat operators go daily. The top of the crater rises out of the ocean while the actual wall extends down nearly 300 feet.
Visibility here often reaches over 100 feet. There are over 250 varieties of fish that call this place home. One often sees manta rays and turtles swim along the wall to feed. While the seasoned scuba diver will have an amazing time here, this is also a great place for snorkeling. The clear water makes it easy to follow the line of the wall and have a great view of many colorful sea creatures.
Adventure is Just a Beach Away
On the northwestern shore of Maui is Black Rock, which has some of the clearest water for diving and snorkeling. The variety of fish you will find here is incredible. Black Rock is a lava rock formation that rises from the water in Kaanapali Beach Park. Park your car, grab your fins and mask and in a few minutes you will be in the warm Maui waters enjoying the undersea life.
In late winter as the humpback whales migrate down from Alaska, you can hear their songs echo through the waters around you. Watching from the beach you can sometimes see these huge creatures as they move slowly to their summer homes in the Pacific.
Underwater Caves for the Spelunker
In southern Maui from the beach off of Makena Road, you can dive in Five Caves. This is a series of caverns underwater that is home to a large number of wrasses, puffer fish and trigger fish. You will likely see turtles and perhaps a harmless reef shark living here as well.
These are just some of the many places in Maui where you can have an amazing diving getaway. Whether you scuba dive or snorkel, diving Maui will make you want to come back over and over to see what’s changed!
